Since London saw its world premiere in 1945, Peter Grimes has crossed all frontiers with performances at the great opera houses around the world. Despite its specific setting on the Suffolk coast, the story, inspired by George Crabbe's poem "The Borough," explores universal themes of human relationship. The psychological depth of the leading character has attracted renowned singing actors, from Peter Pears and Jon Vickers through to Ben Heppner and Anthony Dean Griffey, with recordings on numerous labels from Decca to Chandos.
The current Metropolitan Opera production of Peter Grimes -- running Feb. 28; Mar. 3, 7, 11, 15, 20, 24 -- marks the debut of Director John Doyle, best known for his Tony Award-winning interpretation of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. Conductor Donald Runnicles will lead tenor Anthony Dean Griffey in the complex title role, and the riveting Patricia Racette as Ellen Orford, Grimes’s loyal friend.
Fast approaching is Britten's centenary in 2013, with plans for international celebrations underway.
