New Copland publications: piano, violin, vocal
(March 2008)
A series of new Aaron Copland publications offer instrumentalists and singers the chance to explore the range of his repertoire: both original works and new transcriptions.Copland Piano Collection
15 works including Piano Sonata, Piano Variations, Four Piano Blues and Three Moods.
Copland's keyboard music offers a different side to the composer of Appalachian Spring or Fanfare for the Common Man. Piano was his first instrument, and therefore offered his most natural vehicle of expression as he developed an individual musical voice. This experimentation is apparent in the Passacaglia, written when a student of Nadia Boulanger in Paris, the special effects of the Piano Variations or the popular music influences in the Piano Sonata or Four Piano Blues.
Appalachian Spring Suite for piano
Appalachian Spring Suite for violin and piano
These new transcriptions by Bryan Stanley offer Copland's much-loved ballet score to instrumentalists. Composed in 1943-44 for the Martha Graham company, the action of the ballet concerns "a pioneer celebration in spring around a newly-built farmhouse in the Pennsylvania hills in the early part of the last century [1800s]." The transcriptions have been created following close consultation with both the original 13-instrument chamber ensemble version and the composer's 1945 suite for symphony orchestra. All tempo indications and expressive markings have been retained, as have most articulations. Small adjustments have been sympathetically made where demanded to make the instrumental parts fully idiomatic.

Art Songs and Arias (medium/low voice)
These new collections draw on the full range of Aaron Copland's vocal output, both art songs written for recital performance and vocal gems from his two operas The Tender Land and The Second Hurricane. Included are his masterly setting of Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson which is firmly established as a classic in the English language song repertoire, together with the Four Early Songs from his years of study in the USA and with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Highlights of the opera repertoire are Laurie's Song and Martin's Song from The Tender Land, both found in the high voice volume.
