FEATURED COMPOSERS

New Stravinsky Violin Collection published

(March 2008)

Available for the first time in one volume, the new Stravinsky Violin Collection presents a comprehensive survey of nine of the composer's chamber music pieces for the instrument. Large-scale works include the Duo Concertante and two versions of his music drawn from Pulcinella: the 1925 Suite and the 1932 transcription created with Samuel Dushkin, who inspired a newfound interest in Stravinsky for music for the violin.

Stravinsky focused on the violin as a solo instrument in the early 1930s following his composition of the Violin Concerto for Dushkin. In 1932 he toured as a duo partner with Dushkin in recitals on tour in Europe and the USA and for these tour programmes he composed the Duo Concertante and, with Dushkin's input, made several arrangements for violin and piano of his ealier opera and ballet scores, including music from PetrushkaMavra, The Fairy's Kiss, and Apollon Musagète.

As a composer, Stravinsky worked mainly in large mediums, preferring dramatic works and the orchestra to chamber ensembles and instrumental works. Still, it is interesting to note that, with the exceptions of the voice and his own instrument, the piano, there was no other instrument for which Stravinsky created more solo works than the violin.
