Reich, Rorem, and Meyer Honored at American Music Center (AMC) Annual Awards

Steve Reich, Ned Rorem, and Edgar Meyer were on hand last night to receive awards at the 44th Annual American Music Center (AMC) Meeting. The formal ceremony, held at New York City’s Chelsea Art Museum, was well attended by AMC members, the press, and invited guests.Steve Reich was presented with the Founders Award, the highest distinction given by the AMC, for having altered the course of music history. Said AMC Chief Executive Officer Joanne Hubbard Cossa in a statement: “[Steve Reich] transformed the way we listen and think about music, and his work continues to have a profound and lasting influence on all musical genres.” The Founders Award is given at the discretion of AMC’s Board of Directors to celebrate a lifetime achievement in the field of new American music. Elliott Carter was the first to receive this award, in 1999.
Both Ned Rorem and Edgar Meyer were honored with Letters of Distinction which are presented every year to recognize those who have made a significant contribution to the field of contemporary American music. In her statement, Hubbard Cossa praised Rorem for his “remarkable American art song repertoire that is as great a cultural legacy” as well as his “important catalog of concertos which are championed by soloists and orchestras in concert halls and on recordings.” Edgar Meyer was honored for being “equally proficient at classical music and country music,” a talent which Hubbard Cossa noted “erases the boundaries between these styles in his own works, and in doing so has bridged seemingly-impossible-to-bridge audiences.”
Previous honorees include Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Alberto Ginastera, Elliott Carter, and John Adams.
