European prize for tenor Domingo

Spanish tenor Placído Domingo has been awarded the European Cultural Foundation’s Culture Prize.
The award – presented on 24 July in the White Hall of Mainau Castle, in the Lake Constance region – recognised the tenor for his ‘cultural work and impact around the world’ and for his achievements in supporting young artists with his international Operalia Contest.
Domingo launched the Operalia Contest in 1993 as a means of boosting gifted young singers’ employment opportunities in opera companies around the world.
Many of its winners have gone on to achieve considerable success and to perform at places such as La Scala, L’Opera National de Paris and other major venues throughout the world.
Domingo was the first classical artist to have a solo concert in New York’s Central Park and has won eight Grammy awards for his recordings. He achieved worldwide fame as one of the now-legendary ‘Three Tenors’, alongside Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras.
