Kennedy Center honour for Itzhak Perlman

Itzhak Perlman, one of the world’s greatest virtuoso violinists, has been honoured by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC.
The award, to be presented at the White House on 7 December, is being given to Perlman for his ‘unsurpassed artistic achievement’ during a career that has lasted over 40 years and has seen him perform with almost every major orchestra in the world.
Perlman was born in Israel in 1945 and completed his initial training at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv before studying at New York’s Juilliard School with Ivan Galamian and Dorothy DeLay.
He went on to achieve worldwide success after an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and since then has received four Emmy Awards, fifteen Grammy Awards and, in 1986, the US Medal of Liberty.
In 1994 he founded the Perlman Summer Music Program, an intensive study program for musically gifted students of violin, viola, cello and piano between the ages of 11 and 18 from around the world. The programme aims to help young soloists mature as artists in a supportive environment.
Earlier this year Perlman was named as the Juilliard School’s Dorothy Richard Starling Chair in Violin Studies, a post previously held by his former teacher Dorothy DeLay.
